Teachers can't teach what they don't know....

Here at Earthwatch we are on a mission to connect the next generation with nature, by embedding outdoor learning in the UK curriculum.  But we need your help...

We are failing the next generation. We cannot stand by and leave them to a defining decade they are not ready for.

But we can create a generation that is able and willing to learn, challenge and persevere.

Our future economies, jobs, and lifestyles will be influenced by the environmental challenges we face today. Sustainability and climate change will touch every career. We need to empower employees of the future because children today quite literally are the future. But we have a problem…

Environmental Science is often not addressed in schools beyond photosynthesis and the water cycle. A practical application of climate science literacy is not there.

The main reason? Simply because teachers are not trained in it. But we have another problem too. Not only are we facing a climate and biodiversity crisis, children’s connection to nature is rapidly declining.

Children are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature and the environment. It is so serious that it even has been given a name - Nature Deficit Disorder. This is particularly prevalent amongst children from ethnic minority groups and low-income households, and where access to nature is particularly poor in underserved communities, which is why this is where we are channelling our efforts.

We simply cannot standby and watch this happen. Can you?

Our Teach Earth education programme is designed to equip teachers and trainee teachers with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to connect children with nature as part of the curriculum.

This is particularly urgent for children in urban and underserved communities But teachers can't teach what they don't know.

Through the Teach Earth programme we aim to reach 50% of children from underserved communities by 2030.

We know that teachers can become catalysts to achieve a movement of positive action for the future of our planet.

We have the expertise. We have the support from teachers and the children. But schools don't have the budget.

We need to be training more teachers right NOW and with your support we can make this happen.

By partnering with Earthwatch, your business will be:

  • Investing in climate education for the next generation, in alignment with the Department of Education's Sustainability Strategy Building a more diverse and inclusive talent pipeline with STEM skills.
  • Demonstrating your commitment as a responsible business.
  • Taking practical action on the climate and ecological emergencies.
  • Working with an internationally recognised environmental NGO

Our approach is flexible and inclusive meaning that your support can be customised, for example to support a programme in a particular town, or year group from early years to KS4, as well as SEND provision (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).

Let's talk and together we can make a difference...

The impact is a far reaching ripple effect from direct action at the classroom level to indirect impacts on pupils and peers.

We just need the opportunity to engage with teachers...

Where I’m teaching is a very built up area and quite deprived in a number of ways. I think that cultivating really specific opportunities for children to experience nature, to be out and about doing things they wouldn’t normally do, in the safe container of a school trip or school visit is an invaluable experience for them to have.”

We are an environmental organisation with science at its heart. With curriculum linked resources and tangible actions, Teach Earth is doing something very different to other programmes.

It’s not simply about immersive experiences in nature. We take a pragmatic approach to show how people can bring in an everyday connection, even in urban built up spaces.

It’s about finding nature in our everyday surroundings.

We want teachers and young people to feel confident that they understand the environmental challenges on a global and local level. Knowing what it means to them in their everyday life and also feeling that they can make a difference. What we really champion is an interdisciplinary approach opening up equitable opportunities in green careers across sectors.”
Megan Evans, Learning and Engagement Manager, Earthwatch

“If the UK education system wishes to be world-leading, it has to prepare every child for adulthood in a net zero world, teach the green skills and agile, adaptable thinking, educate about survival, and hopefully perseverance and restoration. Otherwise we are painting a picture of a life that will no longer be sustainable, safe or even available.”
Emma Rudzinskaite, Learning and Engagement Co-ordinator, Earthwatch
